Korean engagement photos in Bukchon Hanok Village

Yeonhui & Sunwoong

Seoul, South Korea

As a multicultural photographer, one of my greatest joys is connecting with couples around the world — even when we don’t share the same language!

During my recent travels to Seoul, South Korea, I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph Yeonhui and Sunwoong’s engagement session in the beautiful Bukchon Hanok Village (a historic neighborhood filled with traditional Korean architecture and winding streets that seem to tell stories of their own).

This shoot came together through mutual friends who heard I’d be traveling to Seoul and connected me with the couple. From the start, it was clear that this session would be special and a celebration of love, culture, and trust that transcended words.

Meeting in Bukchon Hanok Village

Nestled between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village is one of Seoul’s most picturesque destinations, known for its traditional wooden homes (hanoks) and peaceful alleys. It’s also a popular tourist attraction, which meant we had to get creative to find quiet corners without crowds in the background!

Even with the hustle and bustle around us, the charm of Bukchon provided the perfect setting. Warm light bouncing off clay rooftops, intricate wooden doors framing the couple, and narrow stone paths that created intimate backdrops for their portraits.

Overcoming language barriers with connection

Before meeting in person, Yeonhui and I had planned everything over Google translated messages, from where to meet to what they’d wear for the session. Once we met in person, communication was more challenging but thankfully Sunwoong spoke a little English and helped translate when needed.

Photography, however, has a universal language of its own. With gestures, smiles, and laughter, we found our rhythm. I guided them through natural movements that helped them relax and by posing with my partner, inviting them to mirror us. As the session went on, I could see their comfort growing. They started off reserved, unsure how to pose, but ended up completely at ease with each other and the camera.

For couples who may not be used to public displays of affection (as is common in Korean culture), this kind of transformation is incredibly rewarding to witness. By the end, they were laughing, walking hand-in-hand, and letting their connection shine in such a natural, beautiful way.

A perfect ending — Korean BBQ and new friendships

After the photoshoot, Yeonhui and Sunwoong expressed their gratitude for the session by inviting my partner and me to lunch at a local Korean BBQ spot. They even brought me thoughtful gifts, a gesture that truly touched my heart. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable day that reminded me why I love what I do: photography isn’t just about the images, it’s about connection, kindness, and shared experience.

Glad to have met you, Yeonhui and Sunwoong! Hope to see you again in Austin for some Texas BBQ.

Why hire a travel photographer for your engagement session

Working abroad often means facing unpredictable challenges, from language barriers to crowded location, but it’s exactly what I love most about travel photography. My goal is always to make couples feel seen, celebrated, and comfortable, no matter where in the world we are.

Whether it’s a romantic session in Seoul, a wedding in Austin, or a celebration in a new destination, I bring both experience and sensitivity to the cultures I photograph. The result is always the same: authentic, heartfelt images that reflect who you are and your love story. If you want a photographer who’s comfortable navigating different cultures, languages, and locations, I’d love to connect. Reach out to learn more about booking your session.
