A Family Affair: Maternity & Post-Wedding Photography at McKinney Falls State Park

One of the most rewarding parts of being a photographer is getting to document my clients' biggest milestones—not just once, but again and again as their lives evolve. This recent session was extra special because it brought together two couples I’ve had the privilege of photographing before.

The first couple, newlyweds celebrating their post-wedding glow, and the second, expecting parents eagerly awaiting the arrival of their little one, share more than just my camera lens in common. The bride and the father-to-be are siblings, making this a true family affair! Having previously captured both of their weddings, it was an absolute joy to reconnect with them for this next chapter in their lives.

Why McKinney Falls is Perfect for Photography

For their sessions, we chose McKinney Falls State Park in Austin, TX, a location that perfectly complements love stories of all kinds. From cascading waterfalls to rugged limestone formations and golden fields, this park offers a stunning variety of backdrops that make every session feel unique.

If you're considering an outdoor session in Austin, McKinney Falls State Park is a fantastic choice. Here’s what makes it so special:

📍 Lower Falls & Upper Falls – The park's iconic waterfalls create a dramatic and breathtaking setting, perfect for romantic or serene moments.

🌾 Golden Fields & Open Spaces – If you're looking for that dreamy, sun-kissed glow, the open meadows provide an ideal backdrop, especially at sunset.

🌳 Winding Trails & Oak Trees – For couples or families who love an organic, earthy feel, the shaded trails and towering oaks offer a beautifully intimate atmosphere.

🏞 Rock Formations & Riverbeds – The park’s textured limestone and flowing water add a unique touch, whether you're going for adventurous or elegant portraits.

Pro Tips for Your McKinney Falls Photoshoot

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes 🥾 – While the park offers incredible scenery, some areas have uneven ground and require a bit of light hiking. I always recommend bringing sturdy, comfortable shoes (you can swap them for dressier ones once we reach the perfect spot!).

  • Plan Around Golden Hour 🌅 – The best lighting happens right after sunrise or before sunset, making for the most magical photos. While we did not venture out to the waterfalls out of precaution for the mother-to-be, the water also creates beautiful sun-kissed reflections and caustics.

  • Be Prepared for Nature 🌿 – Since we’ll be in a state park, expect a little bit of dirt, potential bug encounters, and the occasional curious deer in the background! It’s also a popular spots so it can get busy, but leave it up to a professional photographer to make it seem like you had the entire park to yourselves.

Documenting Life’s Most Precious Milestones

Seeing these two couples grow, both in love and family, was an honor. I’ve been working with Jess multiple times ever since her bridal session, and hope to capture some newborn photos for her when the time comes!

Whether you’re celebrating your union, an upcoming addition to your family, or simply want to capture a special moment in time, we’d love to help tell your story through photography.
