A Muslim American wedding in Dallas
Certain weddings are just extra sweet - Orooj and Hunter’s union is definitely one of them.
Orooj and Hunter are both from Dallas, Texas, but culturally couldn’t be more different. Orooj is Indian/Pakistani, and her family wanted to honor their heritage with a traditional South Asian ceremony - the Nikkah.
For Hunter and his parents, this was a brand new experience and a beautiful way to show respect to the family he was marrying.
This small and intimate event was a pleasure to document, both through photography AND videography. To properly share their story, I invite you to watch their adorable wedding film:
Getting ready
It takes a very well organized family to host an entire wedding in their own house! I was impressed to learn that Orooj’s sisters planned everything themselves. All the details, outfits, jewelry, and decorations were elegantly curated. The parents lucked out with these three beautiful and talented daughters!
Orooj’s family are some of the sweetest people I’ve met. The ladies got ready together, sharing laughter, tears, and heartfelt moments as they witnessed their baby become a stunning bride. While everyone looked amazing, Orooj’s nieces and nephew were beyond precious with adorable matching outfits! As they say in Muslim weddings, “Masha’Allah” (to be impressed by something beautiful).
The ceremony
As far as easy going and stress-free ceremonies are concerned, this one takes the cake!
There was no need to travel far. With a simple tent, tables and chair rentals, the backyard of the house was transformed into an altar and reception area all in one. The guests arrived and took their place, awaiting the ceremony to begin.
The most important guests, Hunter’s parents, were invited to sit with their son and Orooj while her sisters and father made some sweet speeches. Verses and prayers were recited, garlands and rings were exchanged… and this beautiful couple became husband and wife!
In Muslim weddings, a marriage is not just a union between a man and woman but a union between the families.
While dinner was served, Orooj and Hunter snuck out to have a moment alone while we captured their first portraits as a married couple. The beaming smiles on their faces was everything you want out of wedding photos - pure joy and love.
Shooting multicultural weddings is where my heart is. Being of mixed origins myself (French and Bangladeshi, Christian and Muslim), I naturally relate to and embrace diversity. Orooj and Hunter knew I would understand their dynamic, so working together was a perfect fit.
