Portrait photography in Greece

Shannyn & Trevor

Athens, Greece

As a destination wedding and elopement photographer, there are certain locations in the world that are “dream come true” worthy.

For me, Greece is one of them.

I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Greece last month to shoot an elopement in Santorini for one of my favorite couples. Alas, due to professional complications they sadly had to cancel their trip… It was one of my biggest career heartbreaks!

Since I already had all of my travel booked, I still ended up going with my husband and made a vacation out of it. I tried to content myself with simply doing travel photography in one of the most stunning destinations I had ever visited (the beauty of Santorini is unparalleled), but a part of me felt unfulfilled and longed for a couple to shoot with.

Well, the universe answered my call and my wonderful friends from Texas ended up traveling to Athens to meet up with my husband and I!

Shannyn and Trevor have been married since over a decade (I was a bridesmaid at their wedding) yet I never had the opportunity to get them in front of my camera until now. I was all sorts of excited!

This was the most informal portrait session I had ever done but we had so much fun. We basically explored the city together, and every once in awhile I would stop somewhere and say “stand over here and love each other”. Their natural chemistry and the beauty of Greece mixed together, and our 10-15 mins worth of random photo ops turned out as great as a standard portrait session with my clients!

My favorite place to shoot was an adorable neighborhood named “Plaka” in the heart of Athens.

The streets were lined with flowering trees, the buildings were pastel colored, and most importantly the tourists were scarce. We started the day at the famous Acropolis and quickly gave up the idea of doing portraits there. Even during off-season, the crowds in the historical sites are extremely dense… But Plaka was perfect!

Something I love about traveling with couples is not just capturing their portraits, but also all the sweet real moments of their trip (such as excitedly calling their families or exhaustedly shopping away). I feel truly blessed to photograph love all over the world and help couples immortalize their special memories together.

If you’d like to follow my travels, I post my photography and my personal photos on my travel instagram account: @traveljasna (make sure to check out the story highlight on Greece!)

And if you’re a couple wanting your destination wedding, intimate elopement, or simply your love to be professionally documented during your adventures, I would be honored to meet you there :)
