The right look for maternity photos

I’ve been getting a ton of requests for maternity photos recently. Perhaps it’s due to the pandemic, but it seems like many babies are about to greet the world :)

About nine months ago, I did a maternity session with my beautiful client who was expecting her first child. Seems like just yesterday, but nine months is an entire pregnancy journey!

I wanted to take this opportunity to provide tips for a maternity portrait session and feature this lovely mama with her different looks. My clients always ask me how to dress for their maternity photos, so here are some visual examples.

A popular choice is the angelic white gown. This look is often paired with a natural light setting, and gives the images a soft and serene vibe. It also allows for little added details to really pop, like this red flower!

For those who want to stray from the typical maternity look, find a dress that makes you feel powerful! Motherhood is about maturity, strength, and fully embodying womanhood. It’s also nice to feel a little sexy when you have a belly that drastically changes your waistline. I would recommend sticking to solid colors, so that the focus can be on you and your child instead of your outfit.

A final option, if you can’t decide on the perfect dress and are looking for a timeless look, you can always wear your birthday suit ;)

While choosing the right look for your session is important, choosing who will capture this vulnerable moment in your life is even more significant. Just like any portrait session (and arguably even more so with maternity photos), choose a photographer you feel really comfortable with.

I’m available for a free consultation to determine if I’m the right fit for you, so feel free to get in touch!
