Wedding photos in Times Square

Rekha & Drew

New York City

I recently moved out of New York City. I knew I was going to miss the city of lights and had many locations I was hoping to photograph before leaving, one of them being the iconic Times Square. So I asked around to see if anyone would be interested in doing some fun shots there, and the stars aligned - I connected with a beautiful couple who wanted wedding photos.

Rekha and Drew are my “ideal clients” as they are both multicultural and burners.

Rekha is from India and Oman, while Drew is from the Midwest. They have a connection that transcends traditional boundaries, deeply rooted in their shared love for music. Together they throw events for a community of music and art lovers, and they celebrated their wedding through multiple parties and festivals in New York, Berlin, and Bermuda.

In the frenzy of their multi-country celebrations, hiring a professional wedding photographer was not a priority. However, a year later, they realized they wanted artistic wedding photos. It felt like serendipity to work with them, as we both got our dreams fulfilled through our session.

We started on the rooftop of their high rise building in midtown Manhattan, New York.

The view was incredible, and their wardrobe full of sparkly goodies. While we waited for the night to set before moving to Times Square, I suggested they put on burner wedding outfits and we got some beautiful photos with the early evening glow.

Once we got to Times Square, we were shocked to see how crowded it was (considering this was during peak pandemic!!!).

So we played it safe and I instructed them to wear sparkly masks with their traditional wedding attire to add a little touch of their personalities. It was very challenging to find a secluded spot in the middle of Times Square, so we embraced the crowd and surrendered to the flow of things and made magic!

I thought I’d share some advice for anyone trying to shoot at Times Square at night.

Time Square is extremely challenging to photograph in as the light from the giant LED screens is constantly changing. This affects the colors of the images and skin tones, which make it hard to edit for consistency, although I had fun playing with the lights from the screens. Here’s a pro-tip - to avoid the crowds, I would recommend going late at night as the lights are on 24/7, but the crowds start dying down after midnight.

Rekha and Drew, thanks again for choosing me to capture these precious moments. I hope our paths align again in New York City, at Burning Man, or somewhere else on this beautiful planet.

For anyone interested in setting up a portrait session, need wedding photography, or have some questions about shooting in Time Square, feel free to contact me! I’m always happy to help and of course document more beautiful souls in love <3
