Dreamy White Sands photoshoot

Jasna & Topher

White Sands, NM

Have you ever dreamed about doing a photoshoot at the jaw dropping White Sands National Park? I certainly have.

As a destination wedding photographer, I had been crossing fingers and waiting for a couple to contact me to photograph their love out there (the same way I ended up shooting unions at other deserts, such as in the Sahara and at Burning Man).

But this time, I ended up making my own dreams come true. My partner, Topher, and I decided to embark on an epic roadtrip throughout New Mexico and Colorado, with the first stop being White Sands National Park. We packed a tripod, and captured this series of self portraits.

After doing some initial research, we learned that sunset was the time to be out there. We left left our home in Austin, TX at sunrise and drove straight the entire day to reach White Sands by sunset. The sheer excitement of seeing the sun kiss the horizon twice in the same day made the schedule and the drive absolutely worth it.

We scoped out the park in the evening and enjoyed being present with the beauty of the white sand changing colors as the sun set (from white to pinks and oranges, blues and purples… stunning). The sun rises over the Sacramento mountains and sets over San Andreas mountains, framing the 275 miles of pristine sand dunes. We slept in Alamogordo, about 30 mins from the park, and returned at 7am when the park opened the next day for our morning photoshoot.

On top of being photogenic, White Sands is such a fun setting to play in. The sand feels amazingly like soft talcum powder on your bare feet! We were fascinated to learn that the sand was made of gypsum crystal and had an fascinatingly ancient geological history. The sporadic greenery was also very unique and hosted a spectrum of desert wildlife.

I have to admit, this was my first time both shooting a couple’s portraits and featuring in them!

We simply used a tripod, and my expertise as a professional photographer to compose and pose us. If you’re looking for an even better photography session at White Sands, definitely get in touch with us! We would absolutely love to go back, and highly recommend documenting your love immersed in such a perfect canvas.
